My name is Omar Punjabi. I am an ophthalmologist, specializing in retina surgery in the Charlotte, NC region. I grew up in Mumbai and went to medical school there.
Prior to my residency, I did two years of retina research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. I then did my residency training at Northwestern University, after which I did a two-year fellowship in retinal disease at the Cleveland Clinic.
Pretty early on in medical school, I decided to become an ophthalmologist. During my research fellowship in Miami, I developed an interest in retinal diseases and surgery.
Being a retina specialist allows me to take care of patient’s with serious eye problems and help people with potentially blinding eye diseases. I have enjoyed developing a long-term relationship with patients and performing challenging but rewarding surgeries to improve their vision. I also enjoy being part of cutting-edge research and clinical research and clinical trials, which allows patients to get access to medications and technology even prior to FDA approval.
During my free time, I enjoy traveling, playing sports and spending time with my wife and two young kids.
