Daily Harvest Review (Pros/Cons, Pricing, and More)

Daily Harvest Review

A Harvard study published nearly sixteen years ago determined that the more time a nation dedicates to food preparation at home, the lower its rate of obesity. This study found that the rise of obesity in America, most notably since the 1980s, could largely be explained by the rise of food preparation taking place outside of the home. And even though the association between our fast food dependence and obesity has been clear for decades, it seems that Americans are finally understanding that the solution to our health problems begins in the kitchen!

In light of this epiphany, the market for meal delivery services has seen an exponential increase in recent years, with revenue predicted to reach $10 billion by 2020. These services help consumers bridge the gap between their desire to eat healthier home-cooked meals and their ability to make it happen. This is despite our ever-growing to-do lists and/or lack of culinary experience. With an abundance of convenient, nutritious, and diverse meal delivery companies on the market, it can be tough to decide which one is right for your lifestyle.

Some companies feature fresh pre-portioned ingredients with recipes to prepare (like Sun Basket) while others take it a step further and offer pre-prepared frozen options that are ready in minutes. Such is the case with Daily Harvest, an online meal delivery service that, “takes care of food, so food can take care of you.” In this article, I provide you with a complete review of Daily Harvest, including pros and cons, key features, and nutritional highlights.

What is Daily Harvest?

Daily Harvest is a unique meal delivery service founded on the notion that living good starts with good food. Therefore, they are focused on removing the barriers that keep people from eating healthy food. Acknowledging that the speed at which we live is often one of our biggest barriers, they have innovatively designed good food around our fast-paced lifestyles.

No time? No problem! Lacking culinary confidence? Don’t need any! Daily Harvest delivers thoughtfully sourced, chef-crafted foods to your door, all built on fruits and vegetables and ready to enjoy in minutes with very minimal preparation.

All Daily Harvest foods are created by their team of chefs and nutritionists to be as naturally delicious and nourishing as the ingredients they’re made from. Their continuously evolving menu boasts an impressive array of plant-based options, from smoothies and soups to oat and chia bowls, and even functional lattes and cookies. With menu inspiration deriving from various functional themes (like immune support and gut health) and uncommon ingredients (like chaga and acai), their ultimate inspiration is this: make eating more fruits and vegetables easy.

Uncompromising ingredient standards

When it comes to ingredient standards, they make no compromises. They are meticulous in their selection and sourcing of ingredients. In their commitment to ensuring the freshest nutrients, they stay locked in until they reach your plate…or your cup. The company believes that good food starts from the ground up so they partner with farmers who don’t settle for anything less than the highest quality products. From there, the product is frozen within hours of harvest to lock in the nourishing goodness of peak season ripeness.

An impressive 95% of their sourced produce is organic. They always use organic for all ingredients on the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen” list (which showcases the produce in the US containing the highest concentrations of pesticides). They also work with and invest in transitional organic farms (i.e. farms in the process of obtaining a USDA Organic certification) in hopes of increasing the accessibility of organic produce for all. As a registered dietitian, I greatly value their full-circle commitment to supporting a more sustainable food ecosystem in these ways.

How does Daily Harvest work?

Daily Harvest offers flexible deliveries and a wide variety of options so that you can build a plan that is right for you.

First, choose how many cups you want to receive (9, 12, or 24) and how often (weekly or monthly). Then, choose from over 50 wholesome, delicious, and versatile menu offerings. Daily Harvest puts the control in your hands by giving you the ability to choose and change your selections before each delivery, skip a week as needed, or change your box size at any time. To make the selection process easier, they offer a filtering feature which allows you to make choices based on ingredient likes and dislikes, functional health benefits (like anti-inflammatory and workout recovery), and dietary needs (like gluten-free and low sugar). They even offer a quiz to help you create the perfect custom taster box that is designed around your lifestyle and habits.

As a registered dietitian, one of my favorite aspects of Daily Harvest is the education they provide to consumers about the health benefits of their ingredients. Each menu item is complete with a nutrition facts label, a list of key ingredients with how their nutrient profile promotes health, and a list of the associated functional health benefits. Additionally, once you’ve created an account you will receive brief emails on aspects of food and nutrition as they relate to specific ingredients used in their products. This is a subtle way to increase the nutrition knowledge their consumers possess.

Daily Harvest sets itself apart from the other meal delivery services because of its innovative approach to removing the barriers that keep people from eating healthy food. With Daily Harvest, there is no slicing and dicing, no baking or broiling, no messy cleanup, and no food waste. All of Daily Harvest’s menu offerings arrive at your doorstep frozen, pre-prepped, pre-seasoned, and perfectly pre-portioned in single-serving containers. The label of each container includes clear instructions on how to further prepare the final product (which may take you all of 5 minutes)!

The amount and type of preparation required depends on the type of product it is, but this information is provided on their website so you know exactly what to expect before you place your order. For example, for a smoothie, you will have to add your liquid base and throw it in a blender. On the other hand, or an oat bowl, you will have to add your liquid base and either heat it on the stove to make oatmeal or leave it in the fridge overnight to make overnight oats.

Is Daily Harvest Right for you?

Pros

  • Because freezing the product locks in nutrients and freshness, Daily Harvest provides you with access to a bountiful array of peak produce at any time of year.
  • There is little to no preparation or cooking involved so anyone with any level of culinary confidence can effortlessly enjoy Daily Harvest.
  • Their single-serving containers help reduce food waste by providing you with perfectly portioned amounts of food.

Cons

  • The amount of energy (calories) provided by each menu item varies greatly. Some options provide enough calories for an actual meal and other options provide enough calories for only a side item or a snack. Despite the varying amounts of energy provided, all options cost the same, so you really need to be careful when making your selections.
  • The single-serving containers are non-recyclable and therefore end up in the landfill after each use (unless you find another creative way to use them).
  • Daily Harvest may not be affordable for everyone.

The cost of Daily Harvest depends on which plan you choose. As mentioned above, you have the option of a weekly or monthly plan. Recipients will get three free cups when they sign up using your code, and you’ll get three free cups once they receive their first box. My personal experience with Daily Harvest

I have been dying to try Daily Harvest for a while now. Aside from their catchy branding and their drool-worthy Instagram, their concept is innovative, practical, and valuable. Therefore, I decided to see what all the hype was about and try it out for myself. I selected the 9 cups per week option so I could try a variety of their product lines. I filled my box with all the things, including the Chocolate Almond Chia Bowl, the Oats + Cacao Smoothie, and the Brussels Sprouts + Lime Pad Thai Harvest Bowl.

They ship their products on dry ice, so everything was still frozen solid at the time that I opened my package, despite sitting on my porch for a few hours in the heat of a southern summer. After geeking out on the Superfood swag included in my delivery (I won’t ruin the surprise), I just threw everything in the freezer. Not having to worry about the sorting and storing of ingredients and not having to plan my week around cooking before any ingredients went bad, was such an added bonus.

Each cup is labeled with simple and clear instructions on how to prepare its contents. Preparation ranged from literally adding liquid and blending to adding liquid and heating over the stove. Even better, nothing took longer than 5 minutes to prepare. No big messes to clean up and no time spent slaving over a stove, yet each cup took me straight to flavor town!

As I previously mentioned, the amount of energy provided by each cup varies greatly. In my opinion, some of the lower-calorie cup options are simply not worth even the cheapest option of $6.99/cup. For instance, The Brussels Sprouts + Lime Pad Thai Harvest Bowl was less than 200 calories, which would make this option more like a snack or side dish versus a meal.

On the flip-side however, some of the denser and more filling options are definitely worth even the most expensive option of $7.75/cup. For instance, the Chocolate Almond Chia Bowl was 560 calories, which would make this option more like a meal than a snack and in my opinion, deserving of the price. Therefore, in order to maximize the value of Daily Harvest, I would recommend spending some time discovering all the available options on their menu and choosing the options which provide the most calories and/or the most balanced nutrition (i.e. a good source of carbohydrates, protein, and fats).

Final thoughts

As a Registered Dietitian, I am always interested in learning more about products or services that have the potential to positively impact the health of their consumers. There is no doubt that Daily Harvest’s innovative concept, of literally removing the barriers keeping people from eating healthy, has the potential to do just that!

Due to its ease of storage, minimal prep time, impressive ingredient quality, great taste, and it’s overall ability to make your life healthier and easier – Daily Harvest definitely gets my seal of approval.
