Honestly, most protein bars I’ve tried deliver the same waxy flavor, bland texture, and leave chalky remains of protein powder on my taste buds. As a result, I’m constantly looking for a protein bar that truly tastes great and has an even better nutrition profile. This is why I was thrilled to discover NuGo Slim protein bars. If you are reading this review, chances are you’re also looking for a great protein bar that fits your lifestyle. Look no further, as below you’ll find my professional insight on the NuGo Slim protein bars.

Benefits of NuGo Slim Protein Bars

Improved blood sugar control

Unlike many other protein and diet bars on the market, NuGo Slim protein bars are not made with the sugar alcohol maltitol. Sugar alcohols can cause upset stomachs, gassiness, bloating, and even diarrhea when consumed in excess. To avoid this, NuGo uses natural fiber chicory root to replace sugar. Additionally, chicory root has zero glycemic response. As a result, it will not cause blood sugar spikes. The fiber, low sugar content, and chicory root all make this bar an ideal choice for individuals with diabetes.

Decreased added sugars

Many protein bars are high in added sugars and carbohydrates. Fortunately, NuGo Slim protein bars are not filled with ingredients that contain excess fat and carbohydrates. In fact, each bar has less than 3 gram of added sugar! Sugars not only add extra calories, but a diet high in added sugars can increase your risk for heart disease and obesity.

Beneficial for weight management

NuGo Slim protein bars are low in calories and make them an excellent choice for anyone looking to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight without sacrificing great tasting snacks! In fact, each bar has less than 200 calories! Additionally, these bars are high in fiber and help you feel full. As a result, you’re eating fewer calories without feeling deprived.

Great taste

All 7 delicious flavors of NuGo Slim protein bars are coated in real dark chocolate from cocoa bean. When you consume real chocolate, the cocoa butter provides you with a smooth, velvety texture as it separates from the non-fat cocoa solids and releases the luscious chocolate flavor.

Other protein bars use less healthy, imitation chocolate substitutes, such as palm kernel oil. As a result, palm oil raises the melting point of chocolate above body temperature. Therefore, when you eat it, the chocolate doesn’t melt, leaving you with a waxy texture and a taste that is too sweet.

Accommodates a variety of lifestyles

Truthfully many of the bars I love do not fit the unique needs of my patients and those with specific dietary restrictions. This is where NuGo Slim protein bars fill the gap! They have 4 flavors that contain no animal proteins or dairy proteins for anyone that follows a vegetarian or vegan diet. Also, every flavor is certified Kosher and gluten-free so they are suitable for individuals with Celiac disease.

What our nutrition team is saying…

“One of the major selling points for this bar is how it uses cocoa butter in its chocolate, it quickly melts in the mouth rather than having a waxy consistency from other chocolates which use palm oil. Also, it uses chicory root, which contains inulin, to sweeten the bar; a clever way to avoid sugar additions.” – Dustin Moore

Side note: Dustin’s favorite flavor is Chocolate Mint while mine is Crunchy Peanut Butter.

Are NuGo Slim protein bars right for you?

Pros

  • Only 3 grams of added sugar and made from natural fiber chicory root (instead of sugar alcohol maltitol).
  • A wonderful tasting protein bar that is less than 200 calories.
  • Non-GMO, vegan, kosher and gluten free.

Cons

  • Chicory root also contains lactucopicrin, a bitter compound, so some flavors have a bitter aftertaste.

Pricing

As mentioned above, these protein bars are slightly more expensive than off labeled bars. However, just like anything in life, you get what you pay for!

Hi, my name is Amanda Haney (Legro). I am a registered dietitian and board-certified nutrition support clinician. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. I later moved to Southern California to attend Cal State Long Beach where I obtained my undergraduate degree in nutrition and dietetics as well as my master's degree in nutrition science. I completed my dietetic internship at Cal State Long Beach as well. And I love my alma mater so much that I have since returned to teach undergraduate courses in nutrition. I practice medical nutrition therapy in the pediatric intensive care unit at Miller Children's and Women's Hospital Long Beach. As a clinical dietitian, I'm committed to providing my patients with high-quality nutrition care, to improve their well-being on their road to recovery. I became a dietitian because I love food and I love medicine. There is so much misinformation about nutrition in the media. My passion is to make nutrition simple and to make your health goals achievable. In my free time, I love soaking up the beauty at the beach, riding my bike, staying active, cooking, and, most of all, spending time with my family and friends!
