Sun Basket Review (Pros/Cons, Pricing, and More)

Sun Basket Review

As a registered dietitian and self-proclaimed foodie, I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to the time I get to spend in the kitchen each week. In fact, I love preparing meals with nutrient dense ingredients to nourish my body. From searching for recipes to selecting ingredients at the market, to the time spent over the stove, I take pleasure in every step of the process. For these reasons, I have yet to jump on the meal delivery service bandwagon that is sweeping our nation by storm, until now.

These services take all of the guesswork out of weekly meal preparation. Therefore, it’s no wonder they have gained such popularity in recent years. By eliminating the need to scour the web for healthy recipes or spend time searching for high-quality ingredients, weekly meal delivery services have the potential to add more free time into your busy week, and who wouldn’t want that? With so many meal delivery companies on the market, and all of them offering the same benefits of convenience, fresh ingredients, and variety, it’s hard to know which meal delivery service to choose.

Attracted to the idea of having more free time in my week, I recently decided to see what all the hype was about. As a result, I gave the Sun Basket meal delivery service a try. This article provides you with a complete review of Sun Basket, including pros and cons, key features, and nutritional highlights.

What is Sun Basket?

Sun Basket is a meal delivery service providing customers in the US the opportunity to easily learn how to cook delicious healthy meals at home, using high-quality ingredients, and globally inspired flavors.

The company believes, “food should taste good first, and do good always.” They offer flexible commitment-free weekly meal plans created by award-winning chef, Justine Kelly, and approved by registered dietitians. Furthermore, their meals are packaged in fully recyclable and compostable materials, so there is no compromising when it comes to flavor, nutrition, or sustainability.

The flexibility of Sun Basket

Sun Basket offers weekly delivery of fresh, pre-measured ingredients, and easy delicious recipes. You have the option of personally selecting your meals from 18 different recipes each week or, to make it even easier, you can simply select a specific meal plan and completely remove the chore of choosing each week.

Not ready to commit to a weekly delivery? No problem. Sun Basket provides flexibility of delivery frequency with options like every other week and monthly. You even have the ability to pause your subscription if you need to take a break.

Great food variety (including allergies and restrictions)

There are an impressive variety of meal plans, with everything from paleo, to gluten-free, to vegan, to Mediterranean. Feeding a picky eater is a breeze with Sun Basket’s ingredient opt-out feature where you have the ability to opt out of select ingredients so you won’t automatically be assigned a recipe with those ingredients.

This feature is ideal for anyone with a dietary restriction, per a food allergy or intolerance, as well. For example, if you are lactose intolerant you can opt to avoid dairy without having to choose an entirely vegan meal plan. Therefore, your weekly meals will contain animal products without any dairy products.

Furthermore, they even offer a diabetes-friendly meal plan. These recipes were created with the help of the American Diabetes Association and are high in fiber and low in sugar and sodium. As a result, they’re designed to assist diabetics with managing their blood glucose levels. Check out this video of a customer’s experience using Sun Basket as a diabetes self-management tool.

How much does Sun Basket cost?

Pricing of Sun Basket depends on what type of menu you choose.

Sun Basket’s classic menu

The classic menu (access to all 18 recipe options each week) is priced at $12.99/serving for 2 recipes/week, $11.99/serving for 3 recipes/week, and $10.99/serving for 4 recipes/week; so the cost per serving decreases and the value increases, the more meals you purchase per week.

Sun Basket’s family menu

The family menu (access to 6 of the 18 total weekly recipe options) is priced at $10.99/serving, regardless of how many recipes are ordered that week. All orders are subject to a $6.99 shipping fee.

For your first order, Sun Basket waives the shipping fee and gives you a $40 discount! Sun Basket also provides the opportunity to receive credit for referring friends. For every referred friend, you will get $40 in credit when they place their first order.

Sun basket’s pricing compared to competitors

While this price point may be higher than other popular meal delivery services, it still costs far less per serving than if you were individually purchasing all of the same high-quality proteins, vegetables, spices, and other ingredients needed to create the same wholesome recipes, especially considering the zero food waste factor. The ingredients Sun Basket sources are also of the very highest quality, which is one of the reasons their price is higher than some of their competitors, whose quality doesn’t compare.

Sun Basket personal experienceMy personal experience with Sun Basket

From the moment I created my Sun Basket account, I received clear instructions on how to proceed with the ordering process and helpful tips on how to best manage my Sun Basket experience, like downloading the Sun Basket app on iOS/Android.

As I am currently only cooking for myself, I selected the Classic Menu (for 2 people) with the Gluten Free meal plan and opted to receive 2 recipes. With the discounts that are applied to your first order (free shipping and $40 discount), my first order only cost me $13.00! The recipes that I chose were tempeh “bacon” bowls with sage-roasted vegetables and roasted salmon and broccoli with almond-date tapenade (pictured below).

Within 3 days of placing my order, my first meal kit was delivered to my front doorstep. The packaging was concise and organized and the contents were at the appropriate temperature. The package included a catalog containing all 18 of the recipe options for that week as well as specific product and producer/farmer highlights, which I thought was an incredibly unique way to engage and educate the consumer!

The recipe pages were complete with instructions, nutritional information, ingredient education, cooking tips, wine pairing suggestions, and even highlights of the steps in the recipe that kids can perform. I found the instructions to be easy to follow, the actual preparation time was true to the recipe, and the recipes were easy to prepare. The food was absolutely delicious and perfectly portioned.
