Freshly Review (Pros and Cons, Pricing, and More)

I enjoy cooking and it is often my favorite way to relax at the end of the day. But, I must admit, there are some days when cooking can feel like a chore. If you agree, there are probably times you want your meals to be one less thing to plan, prepare, and schedule.

Honestly, I hear you! And Freshly hears you too. In fact, the company is focused on convenience while still providing a variety of nutritious meals. In this review, I’ll highlight exactly what you need to know about Freshly. This includes pros and cons, nutrition highlights, and my personal experience.

Freshly is easy and convenient

Convenience, convenience, convenience (did I mention convenience?)! This is what stood out to me from start to finish when using Freshly. Getting started, choosing selections, delivery, and preparing my food required minimal time through the entire process. This was very appealing for my busy lifestyle.

Freshly Meals in the FridgeSigning up for Freshly is easy. There is little information required to start your account and the app is very user-friendly. You can choose 4, 6, 9 or 12 meals for the week (I tried out the 6 meal option).

Freshly is a great option for a single person household because you don’t have to worry about leftovers or food waste. The meal delivery services I tired in the past typically provide one meal with 2 servings, so it was a nice change to have 6 different meals.

Freshly uses a symbol system in order to highlight key nutritional aspects of each meal. These symbols are displayed below the picture of the meal on the main screen (I will discuss what these are a little later). Personally, I liked that I didn’t need multiple clicks to find nutrition information. For those who have specific dietary preferences or nutrition goals for their selections, this is a huge time saver. Since Freshly’s website was so easy to use, I had my first delivery ordered in less than 5 minutes.

Freshly Delivery PackagingQuick meals with no cleanup

Freshly meals are delivered in an insulated box so everything stayed fresh(ly). I received text updates about when my order shipped and when it delivered. Personally, I really liked this feature because I didn’t have to log into the Freshly app to check the status of my order. Unpacking the shipment involved unpacking 6 small boxes. Out of the box and into my fridge, simple as that. This process also took less than 5 minutes.

When I was on my way home from work the first night after my Freshly delivery, I thought about what I was going to make for dinner.  As soon as I remembered I wouldn’t need to prepare anything, I got very excited! I came home, removed the box from the fridge, and microwaved the meal for the recommended time. The food was ready in less than 5 minutes. Despite the ready-made convenience, an added benefit is I had no dishes to wash or a kitchen to clean. This saved me an additional 20+ minutes.

Microwavable meals that aren’t Instagram pretty

Two aspects that took some adjustment for me were the microwave component and visual appeal.

In my opinion, microwavable food never quite compares to the freshness of a home cooked meal or even leftovers that are reheated in the oven or on the stove. Since the foods are pre-cooked, the experience is like eating leftovers. I would love to see a few other options for reheating the meals. Even though this would add time and preparation – such as transferring to a baking sheet to reheat in the oven – it could be nice to include for customers that want to pursue that option.

Freshly Microwavable Meal

The container the meal came in reminded me of TV dinners as a kid. Initially, when I removed the package, it did not look as appetizing as I had hoped. Whenever my clients are eating delivery, fast food, or frozen meals, I always recommend they serve the meal on dishware. This small step can make a huge difference for your appetite, improve mindfulness, and improve satisfaction from the meal. I was thrilled to see this same recommendation on the outside of the box – “I look great on a plate.” As recommended I removed the dish from its original container before eating. This greatly improved my initial thoughts about the meal’s appeal.

Considering the convenience, these adjustments were not deal breakers! In fact, the time I saved easily made up for these shortcomings. I enjoy cooking, so I missed this aspect while using Freshly. However, my boyfriend works nights and often doesn’t have time to cook. He really loved this service and is already asking for more!

Other notable Freshly features

Significant meal variety

There were 30 meal options to choose from when I selected my meals. I was really surprised by the number of selections because most companies I have seen have less than 10. For many meals, there is generally a chicken, beef, or vegetable option. The week I ordered, there was a Korean style pork Bibimbap and a veggie Bibimbap.

With other meal delivery services, I always found myself getting excited about a particular meal, only to find it available on a week I had conflicting needs or interest. As a result, I would miss out on the meal altogether.

Even though there was a large variety each week, I noticed my second week that there were very little difference compared to the first week’s options. If I used this service for a long time, I worry that it may start to feel repetitive. But for those that like consistency, or don’t mind eating the same meals over and over, it would be a benefit.

Freshly Delivery Box 1Food quality

Honestly, I was surprised by the quality of the foods (given the fact that they were previously cooked and reheated). I usually don’t like leftovers because the meat tastes slightly dry.

One of the first things I noticed with the Buffalo Chicken dish I ordered was how moist the meat was. If I had been served this dish without knowing how it was prepared, I would have never guessed it was a pre-cooked meal. Also, Freshly stay true to their name – foods are fresh and never frozen. This optimizes the nutrient content of the meal.

Transparency

After my first week, I received one of their weekly emails which included a section about how they have incorporated customer feedback. It showed 3 specific changes that had been made to their Steak Peppercorn dish (i.e. smoother mashed potatoes, a new popular vegetable side dish, and a new marinade sauce).

Personally, I was very impressed by the company’s commitment to feedback. As a customer, I really valued the fact that my feedback would be taken seriously. After seeing this, I responded to the Freshly survey (something I wouldn’t normally do). I was impressed, yet again, because I received a personal response within 24 hours to my feedback. This reassured me that if I had any issues, my concerns would be taken seriously and resolved in a timely manner. I respect a company that is willing to change and is dedicated to continuously improving its customer experience.

Freshly nutritional highlights

Dietary preferences and nutrient profile

Freshly caters to multiple types of dietary preferences. They have an impressive system of symbols to designate the nutrition components of their meals. This made the experience very convenient and can help reduce meal selection time (even for those customers with specific dietary needs).

The nutritional profile of this service stood out to me among others I have tried. The first unique quality I noticed is that Freshly is entirely gluten and peanut-free. In fact, the entire facility is free of these ingredients. This is important and reassuring for customers who have allergies to gluten or peanuts.

Furthermore, their meals contain no artificial ingredients, artificial preservatives, hydrogenated oils, or refined sugars. Upon further investigation, they have a list of 85 banned ingredients including high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and hydrogenated fats (i.e. trans fats). Whether or not these ingredients matter to you and your diet preferences, it was reassuring to see such transparency. With Freshly, I know what is in my food (even if I am not preparing it myself).

Freshly Packaging

Freshly symbols

Freshly accommodates a large variety of preferences and makes it easy to see which meals meet your needs. As mentioned earlier, the symbols Freshly displays on the meal selection page reference 9 different meal categories.

For macronutrient specifications, there is high protein (>25g protein), low carbohydrate (<35g carbohydrate), and <500 calorie options. Others options include vegetarian, soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, and paleo (no grains, soy, legumes, or dairy).

For heat lovers, or heat adverse, there is also a symbol to designate spicy foods. With everything offered, I was surprised to see there was not a low-fat option or designation for healthy fats.

Many meals are high in protein but moderate to low in calories. In fact, the average meal contains 30 grams of protein and 500 calories. Personally, I thought many of the meals were too low in calories for a dinner selection. Instead, I would use this service for work lunches instead of making lunches (time-consuming) or eating out.

Is Freshly right for you?

Pros

  • Meets a large variety of dietary preferences.
  • Individual servings for single-family homes or small families.
  • Quick and convenient for choosing meals as well as preparing.

Cons

  • Higher price a per-serving cost.
  • The only heating option is the microwave.
  • Might be too low in calories as a dinner for some people.

How much does Freshly cost?

As mentioned before, Freshly provides its customers with 4 different ordering options. As you can imagine, the price per serving decreases if you order more meals per week.

Personally, I tried the 6 meal option, which was $9.99 per serving with free shipping. Honestly, this seemed a little pricey considering the foods are reheated and there are many grocery store pre-made meals options at a lower price. However, you are paying for quality and convenience here. If that is a priority for you, the price point might be worth it.
