Freshly Review (Pros and Cons, Pricing, and More)

I enjoy cooking, and it is often my favorite way to relax at the end of the day. But, I must admit, there are some days when cooking can feel like a chore. If you agree, there are probably times you want your meals to be one less thing to plan, prepare, and schedule.

Honestly, I hear you! And Freshly hears you too. In fact, the company is focused on convenience while still providing a variety of nutritious meals. In this review, I’ll highlight what you need to know about Freshly, including pros and cons, nutrition highlights, and my personal experience.

Freshly is easy and convenient

Freshly is an excellent option for a single person household because you don’t have to worry about leftovers or food waste. Furthermore, the meal delivery services I’ve tried in the past typically provide only one meal with two servings/meal. It was a nice change to have six different meals.

Freshly uses a symbol system to highlight key nutrition features of each meal. The symbols are visible on the main screen (I will discuss them in detail a little later). I liked that I didn’t need to search the website for nutrition information.

Because Freshly’s website is easy to use, I had my first delivery ordered in less than 5 minutes.

Freshly Delivery PackagingQuick meals with no cleanup

Freshly meals are delivered in an insulated box, so everything stayed fresh. I received text updates when my order was shipped and when it was delivered. I liked this feature because I didn’t have to log into the Freshly app to check my order status.

Unpacking the shipment involved unpacking six small boxes and placing them in my fridge. This process also took less than 5 minutes.

When I was on my way home from work the first night after my Freshly delivery, I thought about what I would make for dinner. As soon as I remembered I wouldn’t need to prepare anything, I got very excited! I came home, removed the box from the fridge, and microwaved the meal for the recommended time. The food was ready in less than 5 minutes. Despite the ready-made convenience, an added benefit is I had no dishes to wash or a kitchen to clean, which saved an additional 20+ minutes.

Freshly offers microwavable meals

I was a bit skeptical about the microwave component and the visual appeal of the meals.

In my opinion, microwavable food never quite compares to the freshness of a home-cooked meal. Since the meals are pre-cooked, the experience is similar to eating leftovers. I would love to see a few other options for reheating the meals. This would add time and preparation – such as transferring to a baking sheet to reheat in the oven – it would be nice to include for the customers who want to pursue that option.

The meals came in a container that reminded me of TV dinners. Initially, when I removed the package, it did not look as tasty as I had hoped. Whenever my clients are eating delivery, fast food, or frozen meals, I recommend serving the meal on dishware. This small step can make a massive difference in appetite, mindfulness, and satisfaction. I was thrilled to see this same recommendation on the outside of the box – “I look great on a plate.” As recommended, I removed the dish from its original container before eating. This greatly improved my initial thoughts about the meal’s appeal.

These adjustments were not deal-breakers, especially considering the convenience. The time I saved easily made up for these shortcomings. I enjoy cooking, so I missed this aspect while using Freshly. However, my boyfriend works nights and often doesn’t have time to cook. He loved this service and is already asking for more!

Other notable Freshly features

Significant meal variety

There were 30 meal options to choose from when I selected my meals. I was surprised by the number of selections because most companies I have seen have less than ten options. For many meals, there is generally a chicken, beef, or vegetable option. The week I ordered, there was a Korean style pork Bibimbap and a veggie Bibimbap.

I always found myself getting excited about a particular meal with other meal delivery services, only to find it available on a week I had conflicting needs or interests. As a result, I’d miss out on the meal altogether.
Even though there was a large variety each week, I noticed my second week there was very little difference compared to the first week’s options. If I used this service for a long time, I worry that it may feel repetitive. For those who prefer consistency or don’t mind eating the same meals repeatedly, this could be a benefit.

Freshly Delivery Box 1Food quality

Honestly, I was surprised by the food quality, given that they were previously cooked and reheated. I’m usually not fond of leftovers because the meat tastes slightly dry.

The buffalo chicken dish I ordered was surprisingly very moist. If I had been served this dish, I never would’ve guessed it was a pre-cooked meal.

Freshly also stayed true to their name – foods are fresh and never frozen.

Transparency

After my first week, I received one of their weekly emails, which included customer feedback. It showed three specific changes made to their steak peppercorn dish (i.e., smoother mashed potatoes, a new popular vegetable side dish, and an improved marinade sauce).

I was very impressed by the company’s commitment to feedback. As a customer, I valued the fact that my feedback would be heard. After seeing this, I responded to the Freshly survey (something I wouldn’t normally do). I was impressed, yet again, because I received a personal response within 24 hours to my feedback. This reassured me that if I had any issues, they would be taken seriously and quickly resolved. I respect a company that is willing to change and is dedicated to continuously improving its customer experience.

Freshly nutritional highlights

Dietary preferences and nutrient profile

Freshly caters to multiple types of dietary preferences. They have a unique system of symbols to designate the nutrition components of their meals. This feature made the experience very convenient and can help reduce meal selection time (even for those customers with specific dietary needs).

The nutritional profile of this service stood out to me. The first unique quality I noticed is that Freshly is entirely gluten and peanut-free. In fact, the entire facility is free of these ingredients, which is important and reassuring for customers who have allergies to gluten or peanuts.

Furthermore, their meals contain no artificial ingredients, artificial preservatives, hydrogenated oils, or refined sugars. Upon further investigation, they have a list of 85 banned ingredients, including high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and hydrogenated fats (i.e., trans fats). Whether these ingredients matter to you and your diet preferences, it was reassuring to see such transparency. With Freshly, I know what is in my food (even if I am not preparing it myself).

Freshly Packaging

Freshly symbols

Freshly accommodates a large variety of preferences and makes it easy to see which meals meet your needs. As mentioned earlier, the symbols Freshly display on the meal selection page reference nine different meal categories.

For macronutrient specifications, there is high protein (>25g protein), low carbohydrate (<35g carbohydrate), and less than 500 calorie options. Other options include vegetarian, soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, and paleo (no grains, soy, legumes, or dairy).

For spicy fans, there is also a symbol to designate spicy foods. With everything offered, I was surprised to see there was not a low-fat option or designation for healthy fats.

Many meals are high in protein but moderate to low in calories. The average meal contains 30 grams of protein and 500 calories. I thought many of the meals were too low in calories for a dinner selection. Instead, I would use this service for work lunches instead of making lunches (time-consuming) or eating out.

How much does Freshly cost?

As mentioned before, Freshly provides its customers with 4 different ordering options. As you can imagine, the price per serving decreases if you order more meals per week.

I tried the six meal option, which was $9.99 per serving with free shipping. Honestly, this seemed a little pricey considering the foods are reheated and there are many other pre-made meals at a lower price. However, you are paying for quality and convenience here. If that’s a priority for you, the price point might be worth it.
