Before improving your social wellness, it’s important to understand exactly what it is. Social wellness is your ability to connect with others and maintain strong relationships. It can be achieved by surrounding yourself with positive people and being comfortable with who you are in social environments.

Social wellness is important for many reasons. First off, building and maintaining relationships with others helps maintain your mental and physical health. For example, if you are going through a tough time and need someone to lean on, having a strong social network can help you heal. On the other hand, if you are looking to improve your workout routine and need someone to keep you accountable, having a workout buddy will help.

There are many ways to improve your social wellness. Below are a few tips to consider.

Second, join a group of interest in your community. This could be anything from a parenting group, basketball team, art club, or the local theater. Whatever it may be, the point is to get out there and meet new people in your community!
Third, volunteer to help someone in need. Do you have a family member, friend, or neighbor who could use your help? Maybe they’re struggling with emotional issues or simply need an extra hand around the house. Volunteering is a great way to give back and improve your social wellness along the way.
Fourth, make time for your children, siblings, or parents. You can’t choose your family but you sure can embrace who they are and what makes them unique. Schedule time to get together and just hang out. This could be over an activity, event, or something as simple as coffee.
Lastly, learn to distance yourself from poor, onesided, or toxic relationships. You can’t please everyone! In fact, doing so is physically impossible. If you find a relationship you once valued has turned south, stop devoting time and energy to save it. Even worse, if you discover a relationship has turned toxic, cut ties with that person altogether. Life is too short to keep negative people around.
