What Is Environmental Wellness and Why Is It Important?

Do you volunteer to clean up your community or work with environmentally friendly organizations? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re well on your way to achieving optimal environmental wellness. In this article, I’ll explain what environmental wellness is, why it’s important, and how you can improve it over time.

What is environmental wellness?

Before improving your environmental wellness, it’s important to understand exactly what it is. Environmental wellness is the way you feel about, respect, and protect the world around you. It can be achieved by going the extra mile to live an environmentally friendly life as well as conserving the world’s natural resources.

Why is environmental wellness important?

Environmental wellness is important for many reasons. First off, it allows us to protect the planet earth. Unfortunately, pollution is a very real problem. And while there isn’t an easy fix, we can all do our part to help resolve this global issue!

Another reason environmental wellness is important is it conserves natural resources. There is only so much air, water, wood, and oil to go around. In fact, many natural resources are limited as it is. We need to be mindful of this as we work, live, eat, and play.

Lastly, environmental wellness is important because it allows us to live safely. Honestly, some environmental factors are dangerous (see below). Therefore, we need to be proactive and protect ourselves from the natural dangers of this world.

How can you improve environmental wellness?

There are many ways to improve your environmental wellness. Below are a few tips to consider.

First, recycle (whenever possible). This can be as simple as having a trash can and a recycling can at home or as complex as saving recyclable materials throughout the day and bringing them home to recycle. Also, when you’re eating out or in a public place, look for recycling cans when sorting through trash.

Second, shut down electronics that aren’t in use. Do you always have your TV playing in the background while hanging out or reading a book? Turn it off. Do you consistently leave the lights on when you’re not at home? Turn them off (in fact, this can easily be automated too). Honestly, we can all do our part to be more aware of our surrounds and use less energy!

Third, use environmentally friendly products. The more you research this, the more you’ll discover you have a choice in the companies you support. In fact, some are much more environmentally friendly than others. As a result, do your part and support the ones that are.

Fourth, protect yourself during inclement weather. If you’re going to the beach on a hot sunny day, wear suntan lotion. On the other hand, if you’re going to the ice skating rink on a cold winter day, bundle up!

Lastly, prepare and test your home for toxicities. In particular, make sure your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors are up to date. Also, have your house inspected for mold and asbestos. Do your part to ensure the environment you live in is safe.

In summary, we only have one earth and have to do our part to protect it and the environment around us. Furthermore, we have to protect ourselves from environmental dangers. Keeping this in mind as you live your life is a great way to embrace environmental wellness.
