There are the usual suspects when searching for non-dairy milk: soy, rice, almond, coconut, and blended non-dairy options. A relatively new product gives shoppers a vegan, nut, gluten, and soy-free, dairy alternative: pea milk. Green peas are a nutrition-packed legume that contains a number a healthful vitamins and minerals. When made into milk, green peas offer a similar nutrition profile to soy milk. 

In this article, I will break down the nutrition facts and my expert opinion on the pros and cons of Ripple Pea Milk!

A nutritional breakdown and taste test of Ripple Pea Milk

I analyzed the nutrition facts of the Ripple Unsweetened Original Pea Milk. An 8-ounce serving contains 0g carbohydrates, 4.5 grams of unsaturated fat (the heart-healthy kind), and 8 grams of plant protein (the same amount of protein in a serving of soy or dairy milk). 

The calcium and vitamin D content is comparable to that of soy milk. It also offers some omega-3’s, potassium, iron, and vitamin A. 

There are only two identifiable gaps in nutrition: 

  1. This variety of pea milk has more sodium than dairy and soy milk, which isn’t a big deal if you eat a predominantly whole food diet with minimally packaged food. However, this might be a drawback for people who need to monitor their sodium intake closely. 
  2. It’s not fortified with vitamin B-12. Vegans often look for sources of B-12 in products like plant-based milk, so this might be a deterrent. 

However, with only 70 calories per 8-ounce serving, this is a nutrient-dense choice for most people. 

Please note that this is not suitable to be used as an infant formula. It also doesn’t have as much fat as whole milk, so using it as a dairy replacement for children under two years of age should be discussed with your pediatrician or a registered dietitian.

Now the fun part! My taste-test revealed a smooth, earthy flavor with no bitter after taste. Both of my children liked it so much they asked for more! I much prefer it in my morning cereal and as a coffee creamer. The consistency is thicker than dairy milk, but still thin with very little graininess.
