Unity BioSync Contacts Lens Review (Pros/Cons, Pricing, and More)

Unity BioSync Contact Lens Review

When it comes to fitting contact lenses, there are a lot of options available for your eye care professional to choose from. Depending on eye health history, personal goals with contact lens wear, and budget limitations your doctor will work to narrow down your lens options.

Honestly, it can be easy to get lost in all of the current contacts on the market. For instance, VSP now offers a daily lens to their providers called Unity BioSync with Hydramist. This is a lesser-known option compared to its mainstream competitors, but could still be an excellent lens to consider for certain people.

In this article, I’ll cover the technology behind the Unity BioSync contact lens as well as highlight who may be a good candidate. I’ll also outline pricing and rebate opportunities to help offset the cost of an annual supply of daily lenses.

HydraMist technology

The Unity BioSync lens is a silicone hydrogel daily replacement lens that features a technology referred to as HydraMist. Silicone hydrogel is considered the best material for contact lenses. This is due to its increased ability to transmit oxygen to the front of the eye as compared to the older style of hydrogel lenses.

HydraMist is a polymer that is attached to the surface of the silicone hydrogel lens. It is 90% water and mimics the natural tear film of an eye, resulting in better surface wettability, less deposits, and less signs of dryness.

This technology also improves the lubricity of the contact lens. Lubricity is a measure used to determine the amount of friction between a contact lens and the front surface of the eye. The less friction that occurs when blinking, the healthier it is for ocular health and the more comfortable the lens will be.

HydraMist plus silicone hydrogel results in a daily lens that is comfortable for all day wear and a healthy alternative for patients who may experience eye health issues with cheaper lenses.

Powers, availability, and more

Unity BioSync is a daily replacement contact lens. This means you throw it away after one day of wear. Furthermore, it comes in a range of powers from -10.00 to +8.00 so it will fit a very large range of contact lens wearers.

When fit with Unity BioSync contact lenses by your VSP eye care provider, you’ll receive a 5 trial lens for each eye. Once your prescription is finalized, these contacts are available for purchase as a 90 pack of lenses.

Also, as noted in the name, they are designed for daily wear and should be thrown away at the end of the day. Therefore, they’re NOT approved to be slept in!

Note: If you plan on taking your daily contact lenses out for a nap or to go swimming, we recommend storing them in BiotrueRevitaLens, or Opti-free Pure Moist contact lens solutions. For more information on contact lens solutions, check out our complete guide!

Does Unity BioSync have a contact lens for astigmatism?

No, unfortunately this lens is not available for patients who need astigmatism correction in a contact lens.

Does Unity BioSync have a contact lens for presbyopia?

No, this lens is not available for presbyopic patients in a multifocal design.

Depending on your prescription, it may possibly be able to wear these lenses in a monovision prescription. This would allow you to see up close and is something I recommend discussing further with your eye care provider.

What people are saying…

From VSP

  • In a study of 70 patients, the Unity BioSync lenses were rated 9/10 for overall vision and initial comfort and an 8/10 for overall comfort when compared to the patient’s current lenses or similar lenses in the market.
  • The Hydramist technology in these lenses is a 90% water polymer that attaches to the silicone hydrogel surface, resulting in better wettability, less deposits and less signs of dryness.

Are Unity BioSync contacts right for you?

Pros

  • The silicone hydrogel material of these lenses is the most breathable on the market and a healthier option compared to the older style of hydrogel lenses.
  • Since these lenses are daily replacement, they are the healthiest and most convenient type of lens in the market, especially for patients who have allergies, dry eye issues, or a dirty/dusty work environment.
  • The price point on an annual supply of these lenses is comparable if not better than other daily lenses on the market.

Cons

  • These lenses are only available through VSP and trial sets are not readily available in all optometrist offices. Therefore, obtaining trials or a prescription may be difficult.
  • These lenses are only available in spherical prescriptions so patients who require astigmatism or multifocal correction are not good candidates.

Final thoughts

Although not a mainstream lens option, Unity BioSync is a great option for patients who are looking to try a cost-effective, comfortable and healthy daily replacement contact lens.

The HydraMist technology of these lenses mimics the natural tear film, resulting in a material that works to reduce deposits and increase comfort for all day wear.

Unity BioSync is exclusive to VSP provider offices. Therefore, you may find it difficult to find these lenses. This is also why I haven’t had the opportunity to personally fit the lens.
