Moisture stability at an affordable price

To start, Precision 1 was first released to the US market in 2019. As the third daily disposable contact lens in Alcon’s robust soft contact lens portfolio, it was designed to combat the top 3 reported reasons for contact lens discontinuation/drop out:

  • Poor comfort.
  • Poor vision.
  • Difficulties with handling the lens (which surprisingly contributes to 20% of new contact lens wearer dropout).

An in-vitro study indicated a 30-second moisture stability test for these new lenses, out-performed only by its “older sibling” Dailies Total 1 when compared to other soft daily contacts on the market!

Powers, availability and more

Precision 1 contact lenses are available in powers ranging from -12 to +8 and were designed to adhere to a permanent micro-thin, high-performance, layer of moisture at the lens surface to promote stability with the adjoining natural tear film. Also, Alcon used Agilent manufacturing technology in the creation of this truly unique contact lens while still providing Class 1 UV protection.

When fit with Precision 1 by your eye care professional, you will receive a trial box that contains 5 contact lenses for each eye. In fact, Precision 1 even has a free trial offer you can print out and provide your eye doctor.

Once your prescription is finalized, these contact lenses are available for purchase in 30 packs and 90 packs. Also, as noted in the name, they are designed for daily wear and should be thrown away at the end of the day. Therefore, they are NOT approved to be slept in!

Note: If you plan on taking your daily contact lenses out for a nap or to go swimming, we recommend storing them in BiotrueRevitaLens, or Opti-free Pure Moist contact lens solutions.

Does Precision 1 have a contact lens for astigmatism or presbyopia?

Unfortunately, not at this time. However, that doesn’t mean Alcon won’t launch Precision 1 Toric or Precision 1 Multifocal in the near future! Stay tuned.

How much does Precision 1 cost?

As mentioned above, these lenses are priced more economically than Dailies Total 1. Before purchasing them, the best place to look is at your eye doctor’s office. Right now suggested retail for a 90 pack of lenses is $79.75 a box.

Final thoughts

I was lucky enough to be at a practice that was offered Precision 1 fitting set in August 2019 (early than the US launch date). After fitting the lens, I found it was both a great lens for initial fits and established wearers looking for a more comfortable and hydrated lens option! It was also a no brainer to easily transition patients out of old contacts that aren’t as healthy or breathable (especially with the new rebates).

Despite a slightly steeper base curve than its competitors, the lens safely fit the vast majority of my patients’ eyes. I found this to be the case due to its softer modulus. Also, the lens was easy to handle and see, which can be attributed to SmartSurface technology!
